About Glen Nagel, ND, RH. (AHG)
I’ve been a practicing herbalist for almost 25 years. I have worked to become the most versatile, well-rounded, botanically focused naturopath that I can be. I have a deep love and respect for the healing herbs and I want to teach others about them. Everyday, I strive to develop a complete understanding of herbs—starting from the seed to the clinical prescribing of botanical medicines My long-term goal is to be an accessible expert and professional resource of herbs and herbal medicine.
How I got started. My interest in herbs and herbal medicine began as an undergraduate in Biology and Outdoor Education in northern Wisconsin. This was my first introduction to plants and identifying plants, and it led me to read Euell Gibbons book Stalking the Healthful Herbs. I loved the way he talked about the plants, of having a direct relationship with the plants, and the way he used them in his everyday life.
I continued to study on my own, while I worked as an apprentice with Ed Smith and Herb Pharm, Inc. Then in the early 80’s, I set up the Eclectic Institute’s herb extraction lab and production facilities at the original Market Street campus of the National College of Naturopathic Medicine.
My work with the Eclectic Institute turned my interest in herbs toward naturopathic medicine. I enrolled at the National College of Naturopathic Medicine and graduated four years later in 1993.
My professional experience. In 1993, I moved to Montana with my wife who is also a naturopathic doctor, where we set up and ran our first practice for three years. Next we moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado and set up a successful family naturopathic practice for eight years. We focused on general naturopathic healthcare with a specialty in botanicals, nutrition, and homeopathy.
In 2003, I became an Assistant Professor of Botanical Medicine at Bastyr University in the Seattle. For two years, I taught numerous classes to both naturopathic and herbal science students. I also supervised naturopathic students in the Bastyr Center for Natural Heath, their student teaching clinic.
In August of 2005 my wife, daughter and I moved back to Portland, Oregon, where I’m an adjunct clinical and academic professor at the National College of Natural Medicine providing education and support for naturopathic students and doctors. I also consult with the herbal industry on product development and clinical applications.
